Kisspeptin (KISS1 Peptide)

Primary Function: Reproductive axis stimulation, LH/FSH release, puberty and fertility signaling
Research Use: HPG axis regulation, infertility models, hormonal therapy, reproductive endocrinology
Molecular Formula: C121H175N33O30
CAS Number: 414044-45-2
Synonyms: Metastin, Kisspeptin-10, Kisspeptin-54, KISS1-derived peptide

Description:
Kisspeptin is a naturally occurring peptide encoded by the KISS1 gene, essential for initiating the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis. It plays a critical role in regulating puberty onset, gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) secretion, and fertility. Kisspeptin is widely studied in models of hypogonadism, infertility, and hormonal disruption, and has become a key peptide for understanding reproductive endocrinology.

Mechanism of Action:

  • Binds to GPR54 (KISS1R) receptors in the hypothalamus
  • Stimulates GnRH release, leading to downstream LH and FSH secretion
  • Modulates sex steroid feedback loops
  • Plays a role in puberty, ovulation, and spermatogenesis

Key Research Areas:

  • Hypogonadotropic hypogonadism and infertility
  • Puberty regulation and reproductive development
  • LH/FSH secretion dynamics
  • Hormone-responsive cancers (e.g. breast, prostate)

History of Discovery:
Kisspeptin was first identified in 1996 at Pennsylvania State University while researching cancer metastasis inhibition (hence its original name "metastin"). Its critical role in reproductive hormone signaling was discovered in the early 2000s, revolutionizing the study of endocrine fertility pathways and leading to clinical investigations in both male and female infertility.

Case Studies:
