Tesamorelin
Primary Function: Growth hormone release, body composition optimization
Research Use: Visceral fat reduction, aging-related GH decline, HIV-associated lipodystrophy
Molecular Formula: C221H366N72O67S1
CAS Number: 218949-48-5
Synonyms: Egrifta, TH9507
Description:
Tesamorelin is a stabilized analog of growth hormone-releasing hormone (GHRH) designed to promote the natural production of growth hormone (GH). It is widely studied for its effects on visceral fat reduction, especially in individuals with HIV-associated lipodystrophy. Additional research suggests promising roles in improving cognitive function, lipid profiles, and lean body mass.
Mechanism of Action:
- Binds to GHRH receptors in the anterior pituitary
- Stimulates endogenous GH release and downstream IGF-1 production
- Promotes lipolysis while preserving lean muscle tissue
Key Research Areas:
- Reduction of visceral adiposity
- Lean body mass preservation
- Endocrine support in aging and HIV-related models
- Cognitive and cardiovascular health research
History of Discovery:
Tesamorelin was developed by Theratechnologies in Canada as a longer-acting, stabilized analog of GHRH. It was approved by the FDA in 2010 for treating excess abdominal fat in HIV-infected individuals with lipodystrophy. Its design extends GHRH half-life and enhances receptor binding without overstimulating unwanted hormonal pathways.
Case Studies:
- Reduction of Visceral Fat in HIV Patients (2010, New England Journal of Medicine): Tesamorelin led to an average 15% reduction in visceral fat over 26 weeks in HIV-positive patients with lipodystrophy. [N Engl J Med. 2010;362(5):407–417.]
- Improved Verbal Memory in Older Adults (2015, JCEM): In aging research, Tesamorelin enhanced cognitive performance, particularly verbal memory and executive function, in older adults. [J Clin Endocrinol Metab. 2015;100(4):1523–1531.]
- Lipid Profile Benefits in Metabolic Syndrome (2012, AIDS Res Hum Retroviruses): Long-term use of Tesamorelin improved triglyceride and HDL levels without adversely affecting glucose tolerance. [AIDS Res Hum Retroviruses.
