Synonyms: Ibutamoren, MK-677, MK677, Nutrobal
Description:
MK-677 (Ibutamoren) is an orally active, non-peptide growth hormone secretagogue that mimics the action of ghrelin by binding to the GHSR (growth hormone secretagogue receptor). It stimulates endogenous GH and IGF-1 release, leading to improvements in muscle mass, fat metabolism, sleep quality, and tissue regeneration. Unlike peptides, MK-677 is stable in tablet form and suitable for long-term GH-related studies.
Mechanism of Action:
- Binds to ghrelin receptors in the hypothalamus and pituitary
- Increases pulsatile growth hormone secretion
- Elevates circulating IGF-1 levels
- Does not suppress natural hormone production or require injection
Key Research Areas:
- Muscle wasting and sarcopenia
- Growth hormone deficiency and hormonal support
- Sleep enhancement and circadian rhythm
- Fat loss and metabolic rate elevation
History of Discovery:
MK-677 was developed by Reverse Pharmacology in the 1990s and later studied by Merck for its applications in muscle wasting disorders, GH deficiency, and frailty in aging populations. Its oral bioavailability and long half-life (24+ hours) make it a popular candidate for GH/IGF-1 research protocols.
Case Studies:
